Author's Description:

Lush greens in the heart of the Waipi’o Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. The valley is often referred to as the “Valley of the Kings” because it was once home to many rulers of Hawaii. It is also considered a sacred place because of the many burial caves in the side of the steep valley.

For regular tourists, it is a sight, sound, scent and feeling to behold. It is absolutely beautiful. The hike down (a 25% grade, fyi) can be taken via a four-wheel drive vehicle or by foot. The descent is taxing physically especially on the knees. Many locals would give you a free ride back up should you find yourself with the insurmountable task of hiking back up. It is no easy feat. This is no Grouse Grind. This is triple the difficulty of Grouse Grind. I’ve gone up the grind in the summer, and when I was down there I actually prayed for someone to give us a lift back up when I was back there last fall. Four-wheel drives are available at the top of the valley. Inquire at the Wapi’o Valley Artworks. And while you’re there, grab yourself some Macadamia Nut ice cream — a really deserving treat after hiking.
